Buffalo Rat Removal Tip: All About Black Rats

Black rats are a common species of rat in America, one many see. However, you might not know what separates a black rat from another rat, like the Norway rat. There are differences between them that you may not know about, or even see at first glance.

Knowing the type of rat that is around is important. When you have a rat infestation, you want to know what they typically do. How the rats will behave will affect your actions moving forward.

While the rats may have a lot of differences, you can trust that there are similarities, too. There are things you can expect with both, and not just in appearance.

Appearance

The black rat is a somewhat small rat with a long tail. The tail is typically longer than the body and scaly, usually outgrowing the body by a few inches.

Black rats, obviously, have black or dark fur across their bodies. The only patch that is not black is the underbelly, which is white.

On top of their smallish head and bodies are large ears and eyes. They pop out much more than what you see with other rats.

While black rats are somewhat small and slender, they are still bigger than mice. They look somewhat similar to mice in some aspects, but are rats.

Life

Black rats live just a few years. In that time, they can create tons of young ones, with females able to birth several at a time and often. This allows the population to boom.

With the short life span of rats, you can expect the young to grow up quickly and be ready to make young of their own. It is a constant cycle in the rat colonies.

Habitat and Diet

Black rats, like many other types of rats, can live in most types of locations. Suburban, urban, wild, abandoned properties - they can go anywhere.

This is because of their adaptability and varied diet. Rats have no trouble handling any type of environment, and they do not care what they eat. There are foods they prefer, but they can handle most things.

Behavior

Black rats are climbers that will try to go high to find shelter and food. You have to watch out for them where they can climb.

Black rats are easy to spot. Whether because of their habits or their appearance, you can know when they are around your property.
